Preparing Your Home and Family for an Emergency

We've heard it over and over again - Do you have an emergency plan? Due to the recent San Diego wildfires that popped up around the county last week, we began to question what would happen if a wildfire or natural disaster happened near home.

We can't predict the future and what may happen. All we can do is be prepared in case a natural disaster strikes close to home. Therefore, I've compiled a list of things that can make it a little easier for you in case something happens close to home -

- Develop a communication stratagy to keep in touch with your family and friends (and think about how you would do this if you're phones are out of service!)

- Gather up-to-date contact information for each family member.

- Maintain, Inspect, and rotate emergency supplies (nonperishable food, water, first aid kits, lighting, and communication equipment.)

- Have pets? Create a plan and keep supplies to care for them.

- Learn basic safety skills, such as first aid, CPR, and fire prevention.

- Create an evacuation plan if you need to leave your home.

- Develop self-sufficiency skills if you need to seek shelter in a place without utilities. Create a supply kit that includes water, no-cook foods (protein bars, peanut butter, etc.), first-aid supplies, flashlights, important documents, and cash.

Take steps now to prepare yourself, your home and your family for whatever may come your way. Knowledge, supplies and a game plan can increase your family’s chances for survival.
